Description
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Director of Library Services, being the chief administrator of the Friendswood public library system, is responsible for the strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and delivery of exceptional quality library service to our diverse and growing community. This position develops and implements the Library’s mission and goals in support of literacy, educational enrichment and public engagement. It oversees all aspects of the library’s operations, including budgeting, personnel management, policy development, strategic planning, public relations, community engagement, and facility maintenance. This position is also responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state and federal regulations, city policies and the American Library Association (ALA) Guidelines.
WORK PERFORMED:
- Perform personnel-related duties including hiring, firing, coaching, mentoring and training; supervising, motivating and evaluating the staff; meeting regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues for the efficient operation of the Department; and ensuring the high-performance standards.
- Maintains current and forward-thinking knowledge and understanding of library science trends, staff professional development, technology, digital resources, community needs and the organization to create short-term and long-term plans pertaining to the improvement of the Library’s collections, programs and services.
- Develops a variety of monthly, annual, and special reports for the Library Board, Galveston County Library System, and the Texas State Library including maintenance of accurate statistics, and maintain the minimum TSLAC training requirement for accreditation.
- Represent the Library to internal and external customers, professional organizations, and gives or arranges for talks with civic, educational, or other interested groups; confers with library users and is responsible for resolving conflicts; staff representative to the Library Board and Friends of the Library, and other groups as assigned.
- Perform all other duties, special projects, research and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor; and must be flexible to attend night/weekend meetings and work the number of hours required to meet required deliverables.
Requirements
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Master's Degree from an accredited college, or institution by the American Library Association (A.L.A.) in Library Science or Library and Information Science.
- Minimum of five-years of progressively responsible professional library experience to include staff supervision, budgeting, public policy, and book and materials selection.
- Knowledge of and experience with automated library systems.
- Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) IS- 100, 200, 2200, 700, 800, ICS – 300, 400 or equivalents or obtain within the first year of hire.
- Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
OR - An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience working in a municipal, county, or school library system.
- Familiar with managing facility needs and maintenance.
- Experience implementing new library applications, website and software.
SCHEDULED WORKING HOURS:
- Schedule of a minimum of 40+ work week; including:
- 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Saturdays as required
- Night meetings as required
- Position requires a standard work schedule that occasionally may include evening and/or weekend hours.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work more than 40 hours a week. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. in the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
