Under general supervision, the Library Technician performs clerical, technical, and paraprofessional library duties in an assigned section of the library.

The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current and/or additional vacancies throughout the Library.  The initial Library Technician vacancy will primarily assist with promoting and fostering patron outreach utilizing social media, creative graphic and website content, and other library related technologies.

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Assists library patrons in the effective use of library collections, facilities, and services.
  • Assists with standard functions and duties related to cataloging and maintaining the library’s integrated systems, online databases, e-resources, web pages, social media, and other technology-enhanced services.
  • Responds to research and reference questions; assists patrons in locating and reserving materials; and makes referrals to professional staff, as needed.
  • Instruct and trains patrons on the use of library systems, technology, and equipment.
  • Assists with planning, preparing, promoting, and administering a wide variety of library programs.
  • Assists with planning and preparing bibliographies and displays to inform and promote participation in library programs.
  • Assists with community outreach activities, including press releases, flyers, and brochures.
  • Assists with conducting library tours for schools, parents, and community groups.
  • Visits schools, community centers, and other field locations to provide and promote library programs and services.
  • Gathers statistical data and writes routine reports.
  • Performs general clerical, recordkeeping, and file maintenance duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Two (2) years of experience in a library system performing clerical support work with public contact. High school diploma or GED. Experience, education, and training must provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods, materials, and terminology of modern public library systems; standard library reference materials and methods; principles and techniques of classifying, organizing, cataloging, and recordkeeping library materials; methods of library automation; use of library technology; internet and database searching techniques; popular authors and titles; literature and current reading trends; and basic use of modern office equipment and software, including computers, printers, and Windows and related software.

Ability to: Communicate clearly, effectively, and concisely, both verbally and in writing; assist library patrons in material selection; perform moderately difficult clerical and recordkeeping tasks; maintain and update accurate records and files; perform basic arithmetic calculations accurately; analyze data and write reports; assist with planning, organizing, and overseeing program or service activities; assist with developing and refining procedures; operate and use modern office equipment, including computers and related software; provide users with technological assistance and perform simple computer troubleshooting tasks; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, the public, and volunteers.

Possession and retention of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License is a condition of continued employment.
Must be willing and able to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
