Description
Fire Inspector II will perform a variety of technical duties in the field and office which include plan and permit reviews, and inspections of residential, commercial and/or industrial facilities, and fire suppression equipment for compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the control and prevention of fires.
Fire Inspector II, is the journey-level classification responsible for performing the full scope of assigned duties and must also be able to work field assignments independently.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree that is not required for the classification.
BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency exam with a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher.

Fire Inspector II isrepresented by the Ventura County Professional Firefighters Association (VCPFA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.
Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill present and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent, and extra-help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy.

Examples Of Duties
- Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs fire prevention inspections, enforcing applicable laws, codes and/or ordinances.
- Recommends necessary planning or building modifications to ensure fire safety.
- Assists in preparation of various studies, reports and statistical compilations.
- Checks residential and commercial site plans for compliance with standards and specify conditions of approval.
- Creates and maintains documentation for file records, and updates database.
- Plan review of complex buildings regulated by the State Fire Marshal.
- Meets and confers with architects, developers, contractors, building engineers, governmental agency representatives concerning proposed projects, modifications and occupancy requirements.
- Inspects Hazardous operations processes, devices, and equipment.
- Plans, reviews, and conducts acceptance test on fire sprinkler, fire extinguishing systems and fire alarms.
- Develops, coordinates and conducts fire prevention training for engine companies and fire prevention personnel.
- Develops, coordinates and conducts fire prevention education programs for community education programs.
- May be assigned to the Fire District's public
Requirements
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
Education, training and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities stated above. The required knowledge, skills and abilities can be obtained by:
OPTION A: One (1) year (full-time) paid experience as a Fire Inspector I with Ventura County Fire Protection District; OR
OPTION B: One (1) year full-time paid experience in a related inspection field such as building inspector, code enforcement officer or other similar position with responsibilities for inspection and code enforcement within a private, city, county, state or federal organization; AND; satisfactory completion of the five (5) core classes (three (3) units each) listed below from the Fire Technology/Science curricula from an accredited institution.
- Fire Protection Organizations
- Fire Prevention Technology
- Fire Behavior and Principles of Combustion
- Fire Protection Equipment and Systems
- Building Construction for Fire Protection
Additional requirements for both Options, A & B:
Satisfactory completion of either:
- California State Fire Inspector courses 1A,1B,1C, and 1D; OR
- Fire Prevention Officer courses 1A,1B, and 1C;
OPTION C: Minimum of three (3) years full time paid experience equivalent to a Ventura County Fire Protection District Fire Inspector I with a city, county, state or federal fire organization; OR
OPTION D: A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college in fire science, engineering, architecture, construction technology, building inspection, fire prevention or closely related field; AND; one (1) year full-time paid experience in a related inspection field such as building inspector, code enforcement officer or other similar position with responsibilities for inspection and code enforcement within a private, city, county, state or federal organization.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California driver license.
