Description

Under the supervision of the Sheriff, the Undersheriff, or the Chief Deputy, the Sheriff Specialist – Community Relations position is responsible for identifying, building, and maintaining positive relationships between the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and the communities the agency serves. This role involves assisting command team members with coordinating outreach programs, managing public relations initiatives, and ensuring the agency’s image and values are effectively communicated to the public.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manages the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office social media presence and engages with the community through various online platforms. Maintains and updates the department website. Monitors communication trends.
  • Organizes and participates in community events, meetings, and forums to promote the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office mission and services.
  • Researches, develops, and implements new initiatives for community engagement and writes funding proposals.
  • Collects and analyzes data to assess the effectiveness of community relations strategies and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Manages, directs, and implements the day-to-day operations of existing Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer Programs, including Victim Advocate Program; Citizens Police Academy; and Correctional Facility programs.
  • Monitors volunteer needs, determines appropriate placement, schedules shifts, and assigns volunteers to programs based on an assessment of an individual's skill set.
  • Works with the Sheriff Specialist – Training to create volunteer job descriptions and training materials. Conducts volunteer orientations and trainings to ensure that all volunteers are properly educated regarding their assigned program and duties.
  • Provides administrative support to School Resource Officers, Community Policing Officers, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Deputies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Required Education, Training and Experience:

Associates degree in public relations, communications, criminal justice, behavioral sciences, human services, or a related field; and three (3) years of public relations experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency in social media management and digital communication tools.
  • Skilled in creative design and implementing effective training and promotional materials.
  • Skilled in event planning and project management.
  • Knowledge of volunteer recruitment and selection, and volunteer managerial principles and practices.
  • Excellent working knowledge of principles and practices of public relations, communication, and public speaking.
  • Working knowledge of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry, and/or standard report generation. Knowledge of design and management of databases or spreadsheet files.
  • Skill in compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports.
  • Proficient and able to communicate in the English language verbally and in writing, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to positively interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to travel locally and attend events outside of regular business hours.
