The County of Alameda has made a focused effort to expand and improve mental health services for the incarcerated and reentering community to help develop coping strategies, treatment plans, and pathways to resiliency and is expanding its team to support these efforts. The County is hiring FOUR Behavioral Health Clinical Supervisors to work within the Forensic, Diversion, & Re-entry Services System of the Alameda County Behavioral Health Department. Behavioral Health Clinical Supervisor – 4 open vacancies*

The Behavioral Health Clinical Supervisors oversee the work of Behavioral Health Clinicians and other behavioral health professional and paraprofessional support staff. These supervisors are responsible for coordinating the daily functions, ensures staff coverage, quality care, and outreach services. The supervisors also provide some direct clinical and case management services, while also overseeing that staff are using proper techniques and protocols, review case records, assess behavioral conditions, and develop treatment plans. As needed, these supervisors may also assist the Behavioral Health Clinical Managers in various administrative duties.

*Provisional Vacancies: For provisional appointments, an Alameda County civil service examination is not required. However, to obtain a regular position, the appointee will need to compete successfully in a County Exam when the permanent recruitment opens.


The successful Behavioral Health Clinical Supervisors will bring an in-depth knowledge of psychological diagnostic methods, including knowledge related to social and cultural factors that affect behavior patterns. While these candidates will have a high level of technical expertise to perform their duties, they should also be prepared for the challenging nature of the environment and clientele they are serving. These supervisors will be effective at providing quality behavioral health services to a challenging population in a workplace environment that is not ideal for everyone. They will be adept at providing guidance and support for their staff who also have challenging work. Additionally, they should bring exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, adhere to clinical standards, and be compliant to other factors due to the unique environment they are working in. It is important that successful candidates can remain calm during a crisis and mediate a variety of complex situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited school in social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, counseling, nursing, or a related field.
  • Possession of a valid clinical license from one of the applicable licensing authorities: California Board of Behavioral Sciences, California Board of Psychology, or California Board of Nursing.
  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

  • The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Behavioral Health Clinician II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) OR
  • The equivalent of three years of post-license experience as a behavioral health/mental health clinician providing clinical and/or case management services. (Note: Previous experience involving lead or supervisory responsibility is desirable.)
