Company Overview
Archuleta County is located in southwest Colorado on the New Mexico border, nestled at 7,000 feet on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide. The combination of high desert plateaus to the south and dramatic Rocky Mountains to the north and east creates an unusually mild climate, especially in the summer months when compared with much of the surrounding Southwest. The County is in the upper San Juan Basin, surrounded by the 3 million acre San Juan National Forest and lies adjacent to the largest contiguous wilderness area in the nation, the Weminuche Wilderness. Of its 1,355 square miles, only 34% of the lands in the County are in private ownership, while the remainder is under either the management of the U.S. Forest Service or the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
To the southwest 33 miles is the Navajo Reservoir, a spectacular body of water which extends into New Mexico. Wolf Creek Ski Area, the ski area that enjoys “The Most Snow in Colorado” is only 23 miles north of Pagosa Springs and features the powder and packed powder snow for which it is renowned. No matter which season you choose, with over 300 days of sunshine per year, the opportunities to enjoy the outdoors are truly endless.
The hunting and fishing in the region is world-class and during the summer months you can hike to exquisite waterfalls and archeological sites, bike on quiet trails, or camp next to sparkling mountain streams. Horseback riding, kayaking, golfing, or rafting are wonderful ways to experience the pristine beauty of Archuleta County – the activities and special events are truly too numerous to list here. Winter brings the aforementioned skiing and snowboarding at Wolf Creek, but also cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling throughout the County. Ice skating, ice fishing and horse-drawn sleigh rides are other activities that transform Archuleta County into a true winter wonderland.
Currently the County employs approximately 155 employees spread throughout 16 departments including Administration, Airport, Assessor, Attorney, Buildings & Grounds, Clerk & Recorder, Development Services, Finance, Human Resources, Human Services, Information Systems, Public Works, Sheriff, Treasurer, and Veterans Services.
