About Elk Creek Fire Protection District
The Elk Creek Fire Protection District is a combination fire department located 30 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado. We protect parts of western Jefferson County and eastern Park County, which includes Aspen Park, Conifer, Pine Junction and parts of Pine, Evergreen, and Bailey. With our district spanning approximately 98 square miles, we serve about 15,000 residents.
In response to the high wildfire risk in southern Jefferson County Colorado, Elk Creek, Inter-Canyon, and North Fork Fire Protection Districts identified the need to proactively expand wildland fire mitigation and suppression efforts. Over recent years, the Wildland Division has provided specialized fire suppression resources, mobilized the public in fire prevention efforts, provided public education, conducted on site wildfire risk assessments, and designed landscape scale and targeted fuels reduction projects.
Company History
The Elk Creek Wildland Fire Module and the Elk Creek Fuels Crew are the main operational resources of the Elk Creek Wildland Fire Division. Established in 1948, the district provides services to the Conifer and Pine communities, unincorporated Jefferson County, multiple state and county parks, and parts of national forest.
Started in 2017, an initial attack squad was formed to support the wildfire suppression capabilities in remote terrain and wildland-urban interface of the Elk Creek Fire District and cooperating agencies. Due to the local demand for specialized wildland crews, the organization quickly grew to a 10-person suppression module. In 2023 after 6 seasons of preparation, the module succeeded in obtaining Wildland Fire Module Type 2 status - an intensive process of crew shadowing, proficiency testing, and assessment of capabilities.
Starting in 2021 and due to the extreme wildfire hazard in the area, the Elk Creek Fuels Crew was founded as a second operational resource within the Division. This crew is designed to proactively fight wildfire before ignition, and handles hazardous fuels removal, forest restoration and mitigation, access and egress improvements for life safety, fuels sampling and monitoring, and wildfire response within the three partnering Districts.
