The NORTHERN DISTRICT OF INDIANA FEDERAL COMMUNITY DEFENDERS,
INC. [hereinafter: “NDIFCD”], a non-profit, private corporation funded by the Administrative
Office of the U.S. Courts, is accepting applications for the position of assistant federal defender
in the Hammond Division of the United States District Court for the Northern District of
Indiana. The NDIFCD provides, under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. §
3006A, defense services to individuals charged with federal criminal cases and related matters
who are financially unable to retain counsel.
Requirements. An assistant federal defender in the NDIFCD must be: (1) a graduate of
an accredited law school and admitted to practice in good standing before the highest court of a
state; (2) licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of
Indiana on the date employment with the NDIFCD begins. Appointment may also be subject to
a satisfactory background investigation to include interviews with former employers and
professional contacts and a criminal history check consistent with employment laws. In the letter
of interest, the applicant should disclose if he or she has been reprimanded (publicly or privately)
or suspended from the practice of law by any jurisdiction.
Duties. The assistant federal defender will represent clients charged with federal criminal
offenses and ancillary matters in the district court. The position will require travel for
investigation, litigation, and training on occasion. An assistant federal defender may not engage
in the private practice of law while employed with the NDIFCD.
Selection Criteria. The successful applicant will have an established capacity and clearly
demonstrated aptitude for excellence in criminal defense practice, a commitment to the
representation of indigent accused persons, and a reputation for personal integrity. The
successful applicant should have significant trial experience in either state, federal or
military courts and the ability to handle a robust caseload. At a minimum, the successful
applicant should have tried at least 5 criminal jury trials in any court.
Salary & Benefits. The salary of an assistant federal defender will be based on
qualifications and experience. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package,
