Job Summary: Respiratory Therapist (Pediatrics) St. Charles, MO
The respiratory therapist provides quality patient care by delivering intensive respiratory treatments and transporting patients into and out of the facility as medically prescribed, within the scope of the professional license and with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, recommending treatment plans, performing physician-prescribed respiratory care, and documenting and communicating patient response to treatments. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.

- Required Qualifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Current professional license (required; to be brought on the first day)

- Additional Information:
- Evaluates patients and recommends a treatment plan; explains the purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment to patients, including necessary education upon discharge
- Conducts physician-prescribed treatments of a routine nature using ventilatory equipment (invasive and non-invasive), oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizer devices to administer prescribed medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation
- Performs chest physiotherapy to promote secretion clearance and suctioning using oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal methods
- Performs oximetry and capnography monitoring according to policy; performs routine review of chest x-rays to determine need for further evaluation
- Performs 12-Lead EKG and basic arrhythmia recognition; performs pulmonary function studies according to policy (e.g., NIF, VC)
- Assists with respiratory care procedures according to policy (e.g., bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy-related care, chest tube placement) and performs adequate chest drainage via PleurX catheter or similar devices where applicable
- Performs tracheostomy care according to policy, including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes (emergent and non-emergent)
- Performs arterial puncture according to policy and determines ventilation efficiency; monitors, records, and reports test results
- For hospitals with moderate complexity laboratories: follows policies for laboratory testing including specimen handling, equipment use, documentation and result reporting, quality controls, and maintenance across pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases
- Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) guidelines
- Performs insertion and removal of endotracheal tubes via free-hand technique and/or video laryngoscope system
- Performs set-up and self-test on ventilatory equipment as required; operates, maintains, and monitors mechanical ventilation on various types of equipment
- Assists with preventive maintenance and repair of respiratory therapy equipment as needed
- Records treatment details and patient response in respiratory care records and the patient chart (including pre- and post-assessment according to policy)
- Communicates with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding the efficiency of therapy administered; provides shift-to-shift handoff communication during walking rounds
- Maintains accurate respiratory therapy charging through data entry, verification, and correction of errors
- Performs other duties as assigned
