Surgical Technician/Operating Room Technician (ORT) Glendale, Arizona
The healthcare provider is responsible for selecting and placing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery. This role scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies throughout surgical procedures, while maintaining aseptic technique and universal precautions. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Shift: Days
- Schedule: 12 shift hours; minimum 36 hours per week
- Responsibilities:
- Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies, verifying instrument working order, reviewing case carts for correct items, and planning ahead for upcoming surgical needs
- Anticipates surgeon needs during procedures by passing instruments, retracting tissue, and operating equipment
- Demonstrates aseptic technique and universal precautions, including safe disposal of sharps and trash, placement of used supplies for case cart processing, and participation in counting of sharps, instruments, and sponges
- Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case
- Ensures surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate
- Assists with operating room turnover between cases, including stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning operating rooms
- May perform assigned administrative tasks to support the department
- Follows safety procedures related to medication labeling, specimen handling, sharps handling, time-out procedures, radiation and laser safety, and infection control
- Participates in emergency call rotation
- Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent working knowledge)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Where applicable, registration with the appropriate State Regulatory Agency
- Manual dexterity and ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful situations
- Ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduation from a certified school of surgical technology
- Two years of operating room experience
- Additional related education and/or experience
